Violent Femmes - Winterfest
Jan. 19th, 1996 07:30 pmI went with Wendy, Phil and Laura, and Fish and his girlfriend Heather. I seem to recall that was the time that Laura said Gordon had beautiful eyes after he had looked right at her. Anyway, like most Winterfest shows, it was in the gymnasium at St. John's Cathedral. We had staked out a section of the balcony, on the right side. That was our base, but I wandered around quite a bit. I was on the main floor in the back, jamming by myself to "Waiting for the Bus". I was up front during "Never Tell", and pretty much the only one dancing (it's one of my favorites). I was up in the balcony dancing wildly to "Add It Up" alongside this girl that I wasn't exactly dating. I was slamming with Fish, and I slammed him up against the wall. At some point later on, he said I could probably take him in a fight. This pacifist take on the wiry, fiery, bat-wielding Irish homeboy? I don't think so. I just had some leverage at that moment - and wasn't trying to do damage. I got a t-shirt, and wore it until the printing wore off. And I still wear it.
It was a really good time.
They opened with "Country Death Song", and a red spotlight on Gano, from below. Snopek did keyboards for the show, and I think he had that big, round-coiled hunting horn.
Little Blue Crunchy things opened, I think. I was not impressed.
