R.E.M.'s Monster tour. I loved Monster. It's still one of my favorites. Wendy and I went. Sat in the bleachers, left side. $27. Luscious Jackson opened. They were okay. Wendy was kind of impressed. She bought the album and was disimpressed.
I thought R.E.M. put on a good show. Wendy thought the band looked down on Milwaukee. They mentioned Illinois in their greetings to the crowd, because we're so close to Chicago, that many Illinoisans come up for shows. Also, near the end, Stipe hurried his lyrics near the ends of some songs. She felt like he just wanted to get out of town. I learned later that Stipe does that a lot.
Bill Berry had had an aneurism at some point during the tour (or shortly before it was to begin), and it had to be postponed. There were two pull out sheets in the program (with tour dates and credits) with Berry's head x-rays.
set (courtesy www.remtimeline.com): What's The Frequency, Kenneth? / Circus Envy / Crush With Eyeliner / Drive / Welcome To The Occupation / Undertow / Try Not To Breathe / You / Strange Currencies / Revolution / Tongue / Man On The Moon / Country Feedback / Bang And Blame / Losing My Religion / Star Me Kitten / Departure / Finest Worksong / Get Up / Star 69
encore: Let Me In / Everybody Hurts / Pop Song 89 / Fall On Me / It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
