Edgar Meyer
Nov. 13th, 2010 11:04 pmRenowned bassist Edgar Meyer played with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. I've been aware of him for a while, but was never really familiar with this work. I'm also a fan of the bass, so I made sure to see this show. I was not disappointed. First, he played one of his own compositions. It was rather jazzy. Second was a duet with the MSO's principal bassist, Zachary Cohen - Giovanni Bottesini's Passione amorosa. It was beautiful. I loved the interplay between the two basses. At one point, Cohen was playing a slow, romantic part, and Meyer was doing some fancy fingering, down low on the fretboard in the cello range, jumping periodically up to the low notes, and back down for more of the quick fretwork. Amazing.
The second half of the show was kind of a letdown, with Ravel and Stravinsky.
